GEOLOGY: COORDINATE SYSTEM

S7ESIVa-1 | Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system

A coordinate system is a system of lines or grids used to determine the position of a point on a map or a globe.

The Earth is divided into imaginary lines called latitude and longitude. Latitude lines run horizontally, while longitude lines run vertically.

Latitude lines are measured in degrees north or south of the equator, which is the imaginary line that circles the Earth at 0 degrees latitude.

Longitude lines are measured in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian, which is the imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole at 0 degrees longitude.

The intersection of a latitude line and a longitude line is called a coordinate or a grid reference.

Coordinates are written in pairs, with latitude first, followed by longitude. For example, the coordinates for New York City are 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W.

GPS (Global Positioning System) uses satellites to determine the coordinates of a location on Earth. This technology is widely used in navigation systems and mapping applications.

Understanding coordinates and the coordinate system is important for reading maps, navigation, and understanding the geography of different regions on Earth.

Remember, practice makes perfect. So, make sure to practice locating different places on maps and understanding their coordinates.
